The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Warning from Monday, February 15th, until 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16th. Snow accumulations are predicted to range from 8" to 12". Snow is expected to start falling again this afternoon around 2 pm.
As a result of the impending weather conditions, a Snow Emergency has officially been issued for the City of Fort Wright beginning today, Monday, February 15th at 3:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16th. During a Snow Emergency "ON STREET" PARKING is PROHIBITED on ALL STREETS within the community. Vehicles parked on the street pose a hazard to ALL emergency vehicles and their operators. They also delay the timely treatment of roadways impacted by snow and ice. Please plan ahead now and make arrangements to park your vehicles(s) at an OFF STREET location for at least the next 24 to 48 hours. Vehicles that are not in compliance with the parking requirements of the snow emergency may be ticketed and/or towed.
Additionally, Kenton County is currently operating at a Level II snow emergency which means conditions on the roadways will be hazardous with blowing and drifting snow, and roadways may be icy. Residents are urged to contact their employer to see if they should report to work.
Current road closures in the Fort Wright Community are as follows:
Kyles - Closed between Farrell and Madison.
Sleepy Hollow - Closed between Old State and Amsterdam.
Our team continues to closely monitor the forecast and prepare for a substantial snow event. Fort Wright Public Work Crews reported for duty in the early morning hours today and will work continuously throughout the event. With only three full-time employees and some part-time help from other departments, they are responsible for maintaining over 100 streets that amount to nearly 80 miles of roadway including from time to time some very heavily travelled state roads such as KY 17, Highland Pike, and Dixie Highway. Your cooperation in making their job safer, easier, and more efficient is much appreciated!
Per NWS, hazards that could occur during this event include: Heavy Snow, Ice, and Drifting Winds. Hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop due to slippery roadways as a result of snow, ice, winds, and below freezing temperatures.
We recommend that all residents know the risks associated with Severe Winter Weather and have in place winter weather emergency plans. Checks batteries in flashlights, radios, and other devices. Fully charge cell phones. Stock up on water and non-perishable food items. If you have a generator, make sure it is working properly and that you are familiar with using it safely. Be a good neighbor and offer assistance to elderly neighbors and other "at-risk" individuals within your vicinity.
